We Are Still Here: What Counsellors and Therapists Can Learn from the Lived Experiences of Child Sexual Abuse Survivors

This book provides an opportunity to bear witness to the lived experience of survivors of CSA in their own voice and as experts in their experiences.  Too often survivors are silenced and deprived of a voice in order to keep the secret due to shame, being unable to speak the unspeakable, fear of being stigmatised, fear of not being believed or blamed, or fear of perception of others. Giving survivors a voice, enabling them to speak out about their unique lived experience, the impact of CSA, and the long-term effects that still resonate in the present. While there are many commonalities in these narratives each experience is unique to each survivor.

In reading the narratives practitioners will be able to fully hear survivors in their own words, and recognise that they are the experts in their lived experience rather than approximations or theory led case studies. This will enable them to bear witness without pre-judged assumptions and allow them to validate the survivor's experience. It is hoped that in reading the narratives it humanises the individual survivors experiences, challenge stereotypes and reduces power imbalance in being viewed through the lens of professionals and practitioners.
